Sunday Mail Home & Life Magazine

My Place / Sunday Mail Home & Life Magazine

Nothing like a Sunday Mail Home & Life Magazine Shoot to get us into gear! When we found out the Sunday Mail would be featuring our home we decided to do all those things around the house we’d been planning to do for the last 12 months… in a matter of weeks!

Our 1920s bungalow had recently been transformed on reality TV show House Rules, where your whole house is renovated in one week (yes, one week!) by contestants from other Australian states. As you can imagine, with things done in such a hurry there are always going to be bits and pieces that need fixing or finishing. We still haven’t finished everything, but we’re getting there!

Being the interior design addict that I am, I used the opportunity to update a few things in our home. I really love styling and will use any excuse to buy new pieces, especially cushions – I love buying cushions!

Thank you to the Sunday Mail for featuring our home in Home & Life and also Nick Clayton for the beautiful photographs. It was a pleasure to have Abby (from the Sunday Mail) and Nick in our home and such a thrill to be featured.

I must also thank the gorgeous ladies from Berkeley Nest, Globe West and Adelaide Agencies for all your amazing help!

For those who missed the paper you’ll find the article with my Q & A at the end of this post.

THE KITCHEN

Thanks to House Rules we have a beautiful Jag kitchen, designed by QLD ‘twinners’ Luke and Cody – it was also the winning zone at our house in week 2’s reno.

Open Plan Living Area

The open plan living area looks out to our back yard with Western Red Cedar double sliding doors that open all the way to bring the outdoors in. You can’t see it here, but we have an amazing wood-fired pizza oven which was part of the Tuscan inspired outdoor living area created by Victorian team, Claire and Hagan. And look how well the Ettie Ink calendar coordinates with my favourite Sage and Clare velvet cushion! Our chaise lounge is the Felix Block by Globe West and those adorable Lucky Boy Sunday dolls chilling out on it are from Oscar and Willow.

On the other side we have a charcoal feature wall and as you can see below our home is overrun by plants! You’d never guess my hubby, Brooke, is a gardener… 😉  He’s always bringing home new plants and pots. This corner also features a large striped Design Twins pot along with a few Potted Thoughts. We love our Green Cathedral coffee table and the luxurious floor rug is the Knoll in Silver by Tribe Home. Honestly – it’s the most beautiful rug to have under your bare feet.

Below is one of my favourite pieces – Pink Waratah by Madeleine Stamer (purchased from Greenhouse Interiors).

DINING AREA

The Dining Area features a painting by me – it’s actually one of my Year 12 pieces.

We still have a few things to do in this space – we recently removed the built in bench seat which is why part of the floor is missing and we’re in the process of building a custom designed study nook/buffet. We don’t have much storage in our home and as such, there is always clutter lying around because we have nowhere to hide it. We’re hoping the built in study nook and buffet will help us out in this department. Good storage is key to a tidy home!

If you look closely you’ll see the yellow retro wallpaper that was revealed when we pulled out the bench seat. It’s from the 70s kitchen that was here when we first bought the house. I would really LOVE to expose the brick on that wall but Brooke is not so keen (apparently there are too many gaps to fill!). Sitting on the console is one of my favourite pieces, a chunky teak fruit bowl I bought in Pt Elliot. I love it!

Also in our dining area is my piano, a sentimental piece handed down to me by my grandpa who I lived with as a child. We used to play the piano together (he was super talented) and I could listen to him play for hours. Sitting atop the piano is a little painting I bought for Brooke as it reminded me of his pet cat, BooBoo (no longer with us, but legendary in his family). It’s by artist, Carey Potter, who I met at Bowerbird one year and whose work I love! That divine pineapple lamp was part of Claire and Hagan’s styling, reluctantly sold to them by an antique dealer. It’s not something we’d normally buy, but we love it because it’s unique and reminds us of our good mates from House Rules. The Chain of Hearts is by Potted Thoughts and on the wall is my ‘Pineapple Pop‘ artwork.

Entry

I love the simplicity of our large entry space – the charcoal front door, the pretty leaded windows, the fresh white walls and the picture rail. On the wall is an etching we purchased at the Nomad Gallery in Darwin by Indigenous artist Nyapanyapa Yunupingu. There’s also a handmade bilum bag from PNG brought back by Brooke from his Kokoda Trek. One of my favourite pieces is a new addition, the Macarena Pendant by Herman Herman (see photo below). The plant stand was picked up by Brooke from a client’s garden (she was going to throw it out). It was old and rusty, but after a bit of sanding and spray painting it came up a treat!

Our bedroom

Our favourite place to be on a Sunday morning – it’s where we try to sleep in while the kids jump on us!

Girls’ Bedroom

Our girls share a bedroom. I’m including this photo as I love the Butterfly pendant used by Claire and Hagan on House Rules – our girls love it too! I also love the original fireplace (sadly, it’s the only one left in our home now). Luckily it’s a big room so the girls have a lot of space to play. Unfortunately, more room means more mess!

Main Bathroom

This is our enormous main bathroom. I’m not kidding, we could fit a queen size bed in here! We love the chunky feature tiles used by Fil and Joe in our bathroom. They weren’t to everyone’s liking though. In fact, the bathroom was described by the judges as a turquoise tragedy (insert giggle!) but we actually love it!

Argh! What’s my hair curler doing near the basin?! I was actually still doing my hair when the Sunday Mail team arrived. Oops. :)

So that’s it (well most of it anyway). Hope you enjoyed a peek into our home – would love to know your thoughts in the comments below… and if you watched House Rules, whether you can pick the changes we’ve made since then.

Below is the article featuring my Q & A.

House looks nice! Wall colours a big improvement from the blue and terra-cotta!
